The Americans With Disabilities Act - 3247 Words
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, ââ¬Å"it is discriminatory to deny a person with a disability the right to participate in or benefit from the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of a place of public accommodationâ⬠(Americans with Disabilities Act Title III Regulations, 2010). The Americans with Disabilities Act is applied to any public place such as a place of employment, a school, any public offices and prisons. However, most prisons in the United States are not able to follow the regulations set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Many prisons are overcrowded with decreased funding so they simply do not have the resources to provide inmates with the equipment or services theyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In state and federal prisons, this means that all prisons are required to provide the necessary equipment or services for inmates with disabilities so they can attend and participate in services and programs. H owever, there has been incidents where prisons have not provided disabled inmates with the proper equipment and services. While the exact number is unknown, inmates who are deaf or hard of hearing are said to make up a small percentage of the prisoners within the correctional system in the United States. The reason for an unknown number of deaf inmates in prison is because a lot of inmates are not properly tested on hearing during their entrance physical examination which means their needs could go unnoticed by the prison for awhile (Vernon, 2010). Unless there is a story in the news, it is fairly common for people to not even consider the treatment of deaf inmates in prison because the vast majority of people in prison are hearing and the deaf inmates are often forced under the radar. According to the Americanââ¬â¢s with Disabilities Act, deaf or hard of hearing inmates are to be provided the appropriate accommodations such as a teletypewriter, a certified sign language interpre ter and appropriate equipment for sending information such as flashing lights to inform the inmate of an incoming announcement or to warn the inmate of an emergency. While these accommodations are said to be

Life Of Frederick Douglas And Benito Cerano Essay
Education Frees the Mind and Body ââ¬Å"Until justice is blind to color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with the color of men s skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not a factâ⬠(Lyndon B. Johnson). Frederick Douglas and Herman Melville lived in the same time for almost the same length of time. Herman Melville lived from August, 1819 ââ¬â September 28, 1891, while Frederick Douglass lived from February, 1818 ââ¬â February 20, 1895. Yet these two narratives couldnââ¬â¢t have been more different. While taking a look at the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas and Benito Cerano we can see these two insights of their world. I will be delving into how these two narratives show the condoning of racialized slavery, the endorsing of rebellion, and their individual perspectives. There is one thing that combines these two and that is their education. Education is what shifts the mind from the mind of a brute regardless of color to the level of where color a nd racism donââ¬â¢t exist. If there is one thing that racism needs it needs support and to be condoned because without it this, it no longer exists and both Frederick Douglass and Herman Melville show how racialized slavery at this time was condoned and accepted and why. Herman Melville shows how the use of stereotypes condoned racism and this quote supports this. ââ¬Å"If on a voyage he chanced to have a black sailor, invariably he was on chatty, and half-gamesome terms with him. In fact, like most

The Battle Of The Civil War - 1686 Words
During the time of the Civil War there were many battles going on off of the battlefield that placed the United States of America in great turmoil. While the literal war was being fought throughout the country there were still political, ethical and emotional battles taking place. A big question of the Civil War was about its origins and if there was more than just one cause for the rebellion of the South. Many issues at hand during this time are: slavery, westward expansion, and statesââ¬â¢ rights. Westward expansion and statesââ¬â¢ rights tend to be two sides of the same coin while slavery is a big issue in and of itself. These authors are addressing their thoughts on the Civil War and what they thought caused it. A historiographical questionâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Owsley wrote of the agrarian society in the South with the underlying question of slavery and why it was such a needed matter in order to keep business flowing in the South. He addresses the idea that the No rth could never understand how the South functions until the North themselves was as filled with African Americans as the South was at that time. So why was it that the South was so filled and had such a ââ¬Å"needâ⬠for slaves while the workers in the North were doing hard manual labor on their own? ââ¬Å"Party Failureâ⬠by Nichols suggests that with the change of political parties at this time and the change of a long reigning Democratic government to that of a Republic government what in that could have been a bigger cause for the war. A historiographical question in this article could be why, after all these years and peaceful changings of power before, was there a war started due to the absurd idea of political parties, after all George Washington did tell the United States to stay away from them. So if political parties would not have been around would there have been as much of a cause to start a war. Twilight Essay Example
Twilight Essay The myth of the vampire existed in a multitude of civilizations and cultures under various names such is strigoi (for the Romanian territory), Apotamkin, etc. But no matter the name, vampires will always refer to gothic creatures that drain the blood of humans, thus being monstrous. The first writer to introduce the vampire in literature was Lord Byron in the eighteenth century, but the most significant writer to develop the myth was Bram Stoker. He is the ââ¬Å¾fatherâ⬠of the vampire as he gave a complete description of the vampire in his most famous bookâ⬠Draculaâ⬠. After the release of the book, the myth of the vampire became extremely popular amongst writers and as a consequence the books whose main characters were vampires sky-rocketed. Amongst the most famous contemporary writers which developed and modified the myth of the vampire is Stephenie Meyer with her famous ââ¬Å¾Twilightâ⬠. In her book we find a multitude of deviations from the myth but still she keeps many things as they are with the main purpose of enhancing the vampireââ¬â¢s romantic features. For instance, when Bella takes on the task of finding out the reason why Edward isnââ¬â¢t allowed to come to the La Push beach, she finds a book which describes what Edward is. When searching the camera focuses on all the key words that point to the unnatural and supernatural abilities which Edward has: ââ¬Å¾the cold oneâ⬠, one who drinksâ⬠the immortal drinkâ⬠, ââ¬Å¾undeadâ⬠, ââ¬Å¾immortalâ⬠and so on. Probably the greatest change that the myth of the vampire went through was the fact that it is no longer associated with the figure of ââ¬Å¾ walking cadaversâ⬠as popularised in the folklore, nor with the rich and aristocratic being as it appears in Bram Stokerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å¾Draculaâ⬠. Stephenie Meyer introduces a whole new perspective on the vampire and this is reflected in the movie as well. The director of the Twilight movie makes sure that Edward keeps his ââ¬Å¾angelicâ⬠aura which the author wanted to underline and he does so in the scene of the biology class, scene in which Bella was placed by their professor next to Edward. As she is walking towards him the camera focuses on him sitting in front of an owl which has the wings wide spread. This scene is interesting from a visual point of view because of the positioning of the owl which gives the impression that Edward is actually winged, thus resembling an angel rather than a ââ¬Å¾monsterâ⬠. But Stephenie Meyer isnââ¬â¢t so quick in erasing all the notorious mythological traits of the vampire. She introduces a few well known characteristics of the vampire unaltered. For instance vampires are ââ¬Å¾pale white and ice coldâ⬠, which is in fact the first clue Bella is given , clue which leads her to the truth of Edwards existence, to the fact that he is a vampire. All these elements give us the image of a lifeless body, as the blood no longer circulates robbing the skin of its colour and of its warmth. Another element that circulates in the Twilight book/movie is the fact that vampires drink blood. What kind of blood is the real question. Edward and all the Cullenââ¬â¢s call themselves ââ¬Å¾vegetariansâ⬠as they only feast on the blood of animals not humans. Stephenie Meyer uses this particularity making it a clue that shows us the kind of vampire one is. From the beginning of the movie Bella notices that Edwardsââ¬â¢s eyes change colour. The first time she sees him his eyes were black, but after he returns form his ââ¬Å¾tripâ⬠the colour of his eyes turned golden-brown. So, the colour of their eyes are an indicative to how hungry they are for blood and how strong they are to resist the call of blood( the first time Edward didnââ¬â¢t even want to look at her but when his thrust was quenched he approached her rather suddenly and unexpectedly). Another particularity of the eyes of a vampire is that they show whether a vampire feeds on human or animal blood. This is best shown in the baseball scene when James and the other vampires come and disrupt the Cullenââ¬â¢s game. The camera focuses on the eyes of every new vampire( which , as we were previously shown, attacked humans) and we can clearly notice that their eyes are scarlet red. So the redness of the eyes is an indicative of the fact that these vampires are notâ⬠vegetariansâ⬠. The similarities stop here. There are definitely very few elements which are kept from all the previous books that present vampires, and to sum everything up we know that they have cold and pale skin, the fact that they drink blood and the fact that they are very fast and strong. The differences are way more numerous that the similarities and in this part of the essay we are going to present just that. Stephenie Meyer also introduces a lot of new elements. For instance the most important entirely new element is that blood has a distinguished smell, a smell which can trigger the vampires hunting instinct. Edward calls the smell of Bellaââ¬â¢s blood ââ¬Å¾ a drugâ⬠and ââ¬Å¾his personal brand of heroinâ⬠. First of all there is nothing that indicates Edward as a vampire apart from his cold and white skin( and the fact that he shines like diamonds but only in the sun). But if this were a novel written by letââ¬â¢s say Anne Rice, the vampire would definitely have fangs. Stephenie Meyesââ¬â¢s vampires donââ¬â¢t really have fangs, but really sharp teeth and when they bite they leave a pretty clear impression on the victims body as we are shown in the scene in which James bites Bella. Another abolished myth is that vampires change their shape, and the most famous animal in which a vampire can turn into is the bat. This myth is not present in the movie as Edward like all his kin cannot fly; but Edward has the ability of running so fast that he appears to fly. When he runs at his full potential no one can even spot him doing so. To support this theory we have two scenes in which his speed is such that it actually makes him invisible to the naked eye. First of all we have the episode in which he save Bella from the car crash, running from the other side of the parking lot without being noticed. The second time we witness this capacity of his to ââ¬Å¾disappearâ⬠in the scene in which Bella wake up in the middle of the night and sees him standing in a corner; but when she turns to turn on the lights and looks up at him again he isnââ¬â¢t there anymore. In fact he is so fast that he doesnââ¬â¢t even need to fly. This last scene is linked to another myth, or rather with the absence of a myth, the one according to which a vampire can only enter the house of someone only after he is invited. It is obvious that Bella didnââ¬â¢t invite Edward in her room, but still he entered and this isnââ¬â¢t the only example which indicates this. Another feature of the vampire myth that Stephenie Meyer didnââ¬â¢t include in her book is the fact that her vampires have a reflection in the mirror. I could not demonstrate properly this theory because of the lack of mirrors in the movie but in the scene in which Bella first sees Edward, the camera focuses on him and we see, as he opens the door to enter the cafeteria, that he has a reflection in the glass (even through a glass is not a mirror it can show ones reflection). In the same day when Bella confronts Edward and tells him that she knows what he is, he takes her to the top of the mountain to show her what he looks like in the sun. When a ray of light hits his skin Bella sees that his skin appears to be made out of diamonds. When she says that he is beautiful he answersâ⬠this is the skin of a killerâ⬠, ââ¬Å¾ you believe a lie, in a camouflageâ⬠,â⬠everything about me invites you in, my voice, my face even my smellâ⬠. The fact that his skin shines in the sun is another novelty which Stephenie Meyer presents as all authors before her present vampires as creatures which are very vulnerably to the sun, as it can turn a vampire into ashes. All these elements that point to a perfect being; they are all part of their ââ¬Å¾weaponsâ⬠as they ca attract their victims which find their irresistible charm. The fact that girls gravitate around Edward like moths around the light bulb is best shown in the scene in which he takes Bella to restaurant, when the waitress simply canââ¬â¢t take her eyes of him. This is all part of their hunting strategy, and this is why Edward compares their relationship to that of a hunter and the hunted by saying thatâ⬠the lion feel in love with the lambâ⬠. When Bella enters Edwardââ¬â¢s house for the first time we can see how the setting, the way in which they chose to decorate their house, a lot of myths are pulverised. When Bella came in the house she is astonished of how light and open the house is and Edward ironically asksâ⬠What did you expect? Coffins and dungeons? ; from his attitude we can conclude that they do not live in dark places and sleep in coffins as the myth states. Further more, when she gets to see his bedroom she does not spot a bed because Edward doesnââ¬â¢t ever sleep, so elements linked to sleep( whether it is the eternal sleepcoffins, or just regular sleepbeds) are entirely missing from the decor of the place. Another element that is in the house but that totally contradicts the myth of the vampire is the pr esence of a wooden cross, a big and ancient cross placed on the wall. So, in Stephenie Meyerââ¬â¢s vision vampires do not have any fears concerning the cross, unlike previous authors that made the cross an object that can kill a vampire. This is interesting because of two things. First of all Meyerââ¬â¢s vampires cannot be killed by humans, they are too strong so they can only kill each other. Secondly because the cross symbolises God, the supreme power, the holy power that protects us; the fact that Meyerââ¬â¢s vampires do not dodge the cross means that they are no longer the creatures of demonic origin, no longer creatures from hell. The fact that only vampires can kill vampires has already been established. But how is the question. We find that out in the scene in which James in killed by Edwards brothers. They do not use wooden stakes or a silver bullet to kill him as the only way of killing a vampire is to teat him apart and burn the pieces. To conclude it is safe to say that the vampire myth has undergone a number of important changes through the centuries which shows how ââ¬Å¾aliveâ⬠these myths are, through the imagination of writers.

Agamemnons Clytemnestra Essays - Greek Mythology, Clytemnestra
Agamemnon's Clytemnestra Essays - Greek Mythology, Clytemnestra Agamemnon's Clytemnestra Analysis of Clytemnestra's Character in Agamemnon In Aeschylus' tragedy Agamemnon the character of Clytemnestra is portrayed as strong willed woman. This characteristic is not necessarily typical of women of her time. As a result, the reader must take a deeper look into the understanding of Clytemnestra. In Agamemnon she dominates the action. Her most important characteristic is like the watchman calls it, male strength of heart. She is a strong woman, and her strength is evident on many occasions is the play. Later in the play after Clytemnestra murders her husband, Agamemnon, and his concubine, Cassandra, she reveals her driving force and was has spurned all of her actions until this point. Clytemnestra is seen by the Elders of Argos (the Chorus) as untrustworthy and although suspicious of her they still could not foresee the impending murders. Her words are plain but her meaning hidden to all those around her. She more or less alludes to her plan of murder without fear of being detected. Only the audience can seem to understand the double meaning in her words. One example of how Clytemnestra hides meanings in otherwise plain words is stated in her hope that Agamemnon and his soldiers do not commit any sacrilege in Troy that might offend the gods. Now must they pay due respect to the gods that inhabit the town, the gods of the conquered land, or their victory may end in their own destruction after all. Too soon for their safety, the soldiery, seized with greed, may yield to their covetousness and lay hands on forbidden spoil. They have still to bring themselves home, have still the backward arm of the double course to make. And if no sin against heaven rest on the returning host, there is the wrong of the dead that watches. Evil may find accomplishment, although it fall not at once. This can be interpreted in two ways. The first being that her wish for Agamemnon to return safely is so she may kill him herself. The second, is that of sarcasm. Perhaps she really does wish for Agamemnon to upset the gods. That way when she murders him she will divine sanction. Another instance that there is a double meaning in her words is in her pleadings to the herald to take this message back to Agamemnon, let him come with speed to the people that love him, come to find in his home the wife faithful, even such as he left her, a very house-dog, loyal to one and an enemy to his foes The audience knows this to be untrue because not only has she not been faithful, but the person she was unfaithful with is the rival to Agamemnon's crown, his cousin Aegisthus. The Chorus' distrust in her is shown by their comment to the herald in which they are trying to explain her boastful and yet sarcastic attitude, She speaks thus to teach you; to those who clearly can discern, her words are hypocrisy. Time and again in the play her strength is demonstrated when she forces Agamemnon, Aegisthus, and the Elders of Argos to bend to her will. For example, she influences the Elders to sacrifice to the gods for Agamemnon's safe return and temporarily wins their trust and support. In fact they sing her praises for suggesting it by saying, Lady, no man could speak more kindly wisdom than you. For my part, after the sure proof heard from you, my purpose is now to give our thanks to the gods, who have wrought a return in full for all the pains. Her shrewdness is also shown by the way she coaxes her husband into submission. She wants him to walk on rich purple tapestries in hopes that this would anger the gods and they will aid her in his murder. She does so by challenging his manhood like in the statement, Then let not blame of men make you ashamed. In which she is basically calling him a chicken. He gives in and takes off his sandals and walks on the tapestries even though he fears it may n ot please the gods. She single-handedly plots the murder of Agamemnon and Cassandra. When she is

Artical report - Article Example The author has reflected that such theory of human behavior should encompass within its scope manifold issues, including layers of analysis from individual to organizational and social, harmony with current understanding of social and biological sciences, ability for empirical testing, universal cultural applicability and lucidity of the theory so that it can be taught and used easily (Stark 131). The author, in the context of arguing about the importance of a unified theory of human behavior, has adopted a quite well structured form and also has provided considerable focus over four major driving forces that mainly determine nature of human behavior. However, understanding the driving forces and their role in construction of human behavior would not have been easy unless prior to the section he has provided a brief explanation about ââ¬Å"Evolution of the brainâ⬠(Stark 131). In this section the author has shown that evolution of human brain is mainly responsible to determine behavior of individuals and their choice of actions, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦evolution has selected several innate skills for human including habitat selection, food selection, danger awareness, intuitive psychology, orientation, justice, and an ability to remember important peopleâ⬠(Stark 132).
